Câteva cuvinte din Agra la început de Rajahstan 29.12.2013 Few words from Agra at the beginning of Rajahstan

Or fi doar povești? Fiecare are câte ceva special.

I am relieved in the morning when Yasin, the driver, is waiting me at the exit of the station with my name written on a paper. It's like a stone taken of my heart! He came from Delhi during night to be in Agra early in the morning! We find an acceptable hotel after some long research and he advise me to rest for a few hours and then go in the city. We always plan the two weeks in Rajahstan and he look like wanting to stay more nights in some places. Everything will be OK and we will fit with the track and the days around Rajahstan!  In about two hours he presents me a boy as a local guide for me (with free services). He takes us to Taj Mahal entrance. Yes, the Taj Mahal known as one of the world's wonders! You find information about it on internet, I don't want to line here all kinds of names and numbers. The 750 rupees price seems exaggerated and I use the idea "once in a lifetime". I won't come again for sure! My guide takes canvas slippers for the main tomb and we enter on the Western Gate, the gate for the people. Taj Mahal has three gates: western for the people, eastern for slaves and southern for royalty! There is another big gate with 22 domes above. Each dome was build in one year of construction! We pass the gate and I see the great tomb. And a lot of people! I take a few pictures from different angles. The guide doesn't understand why I don't take pictures as others in certain places. I have some photographic view, I am not a common tourist! I listem more or less what the guide says. He tells me about the marble used here, about all the history of the tomb, of the left-handed masjid and the right-handed hotel, he takes me on a passage for foreigners! It's too much politeness! An interesting detail: the four guarding towers are tilted out of the tomb for not falling on the tomb in case of a natural disaster! All the marble work is amazing. I will see later all the work it involves! There are resisting colors after hundreds of years without loosing their beauty, as we have in Bucovina! We are not allowed to take pictures in the main tomb. You don't have place for pictures with this crowd! On the outer walls I observe the columns with 4 faces at the base and 8 at the top! The guide explains me his way of being payed from the foreigner ticket (a part of the money at the end of the month). Just a story? We go out of Taj Mahal after the last "artistic" pictures and Yasin takes us to Agra Fort. three kilometers that you can walk! As in Taj Mahal (which can be seen from one part of the fort), I keep more details than all historical explanations. The boy tells me about all the mahals (palaces) from the fort as I am interested. He wanted to ask me for some more money for the ticket (at Amar Singh gate) and he didn't take any money because I wanted to check for the price. Normally it's 300 rupees and 250 if you go in the same day at Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and other monument around Agra. These are prices for foreigners, Indians pay 20 rupees! I saw this difference at all the monuments. Yasin told me that this is for monuments' maintenance. Bull shit! We go up on a steep rugged passage (for the water to flow and for the horses not to slide), we go through Bengali Mahal and Jehangiri Mahal. Each of them has something special. In Khas Mahal I like the gardes with vineyard and the irrigation system below. On the lef side of Diwan-I-Khas palace we find a closed entry ti Hammam-I-Shahi, the palace of Mirrors. I see the wall of the fort on Yamuna side on a decorative window. From Jehangiri Mahal you can have the best view of Taj Mahal at about 2.5 kilometers in line. You can also see on the other shore of Yamuna the basement of Black Mahal started by the son of Akbar and interrupted due to lack of funds! I see an interesting well where from the girls of the fort took rain water and emptied it by pulling a stopper on a water channel. In Akbar Mahal I find the three different architectural building of the three different religion (christian, Muslim, Hindu) wives of the Mogul emperor. They lived there at different times! We also visit the interior garden Baoli where we can see Diwan-I-An, the place for public meetings ant the well (about 10 m diameter) used for all the fort! We go out of the fort, the guide seems to be hurried and he asks me for some tips. "What tips? Yasin told me that your services are for free". He upsets (damn profiteers!) and we call Yasin with the car. They speak in Hindi and I gave him 100 rupees as a tip in the hotel's parking place. I am not satisfied about the attitude. "If you said at the beginning, it would be ok" "You didn't like what I told you?" "I liked but as long as you lie, I don't give money for lies". Yasin takes me to a Government souvenir store where he has a nephew as seller. Everything is fine and well presented (marble, clothes, carpets, small souvenirs, all kind of wood carved stuff). They make me take something small! On the other side of the street we go to a family marble business. There's a lot of work and they are disappointed that I take only pictures and don't buy anything! We go to the hotel and fix for a morning date in the parking. Or maybe later in the evening! I don't stay in my room and go for a walk in Shahjahan Park between Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. I wander everywhere (mostly near the alleys in the jungle) and I am lucky to see two Indian gazelles and some peacocks close to football fields. On non-walked paths I pass a plantation and go to the entrance of Taj Mahal and from here to the hotel. We go (me and Yasin) to a restaurant (he knows someone!) and I bargain with him for 100 rupees for a Thali (Indian specific Indian plate). Enough for today! Up in the room!

Întoarcerea acasă de Crăciun 25.12.2013 Back home for Christmas

I knew from the last evening that this day starts early in the morning. I come down to reception during night and a boy takes me with a car to railway station. It's still night when I reach the station. I thank him and confirm my place in the couch. The train leaves half an hour later than scheduled. So normal for India! I take this time to eat my breakfast in the station and to buy two books ("The power of the subconscious mind" and "The monk who sold his Ferrari" - Robin Sharma) - special edition for Indians (why?). I drink two glasses of tea in the train, start to read from Robin's book and the straight line goes for a few hours in the indian plain to the capital. I reach Delhi before noon and I want to walk around before going to Gunwar in the evening. I start to walk to Connaught Place (C.P.), the commercial center of New Delhi. At the margin of C.P. I enter for a few minutes in Aulia Masjid mosque. As in all mosques, everything is so clean and quiet! Connaught Place is a park with three circular boulevards around and seven other radial boulevards. Imagine a parisian Trimph Arch in the middle of a crowd of all kind of houses! I manage to reach central park Rajiv Chowk by passing boulevards with six lanes and I find the entrance in the park in Palika underground Bazaar area. Formally they check bagagges and lack of knives or drugs in some detecting gates. I don't sit and start to talk with a guy, probably a guide. He wants to give me some advices. As any other foreigners hawk! I tell him that I want to go to Rajahstan after Varanasi and I let myself guided to a Government travel agency. As I mentioned the Government, don't be moody as I was when they speak about Government. They blame the Government for all bad things or the things they can't explain! At the agency they present me all kind of offers for Rajahstan circuits! Two weeks, one week, arrangements for housing and food, only car with driver, fuel and insurance... Obviously the price is bigger as the services are more! I make my calculations and I choose the package I like: 33.000 rupees, car with driver, fuel and insurance without hotels for two weeks! We sign a hand written contract, I pay him the money (half cash, half on VISA card), I have some personal doubts that I did a big mistake and I will keep them until I meet the driver in Agra. My young guide left earlier because he had something to do. Cezar, you payed, now you must trust thast it will be ok! I leave to India Gate and an Indian man from the agency wonders why I want to walk. They don't have this concept about tourists! More, they don't know what a traveller is! I walk on Kasturba Gandhi Marg as a big weirdness: a walking big-packpack tourist! Ițm not allowed to take pictures at Baroda house! Yeah, sure! On KG Marg I reach the canopy built by Lutyens, the builder of India Gate. It's Christmas and all the park from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the residential palace, is full with tourists or locals. I go to India Gate for a picture and go as fast is I can from the crowd. I don't like it at all! I give a call to Gunwar, tell him where I am now and that I will reach his home later. I want to make some more visits. He doesn't think Purana Qila is open. When I reach home I realize that Gunwar and George drank some alcohol which gave them the unusual reactions and their cheerfulness. On Shershah Road I reach the Zoo Garden that I proposed to pass to Purana Qila (Old Fort). I don't want to pay the fee for animals and I go to Purana Qila on Mathura Road. On the right (vis-a-vis with the fort entrance) you find Khairul Manzil mosque built by Maham Anga, one of the wet nurses of moghul emperor Akbar (the most famous of the moghul emperors). It is said that Maham Anga ruled the moghul empire when Akbar was a boy. I enter Purana Qila paying 100 rupees for the entrance fee. There's no line at the foreigners cassa comparing to the locals one! Purana Qila, built on a hill, has four gates in cardinal directions, each built with different reason, a huge mosque and the emperors' thermal baths. The archeology museum dissapointed me because they didn't let me make inside pictures. "Learn from the londoners who have most of the museums for free and you can take as many pictures as you want!" On Mathura Road and Dr Zakir Hussain Marg I reach Sabz Burj Circus where I find the entrance to Humayun's Tomb. I go to the entrance: other 100 rupees! It's more than my supportability limit! I don't pay so much money for nothing! I don't go inside, I walk around the outer walls near Isa Khan's Tomb and Isa Khan Mosque and a guardian rids me: "Dangerous area!". I eat one ice cream to change money for the rickshaw (a bike with a bench in the back, not an auto rickshaw!) and I go to Gunwar's house after dawn. On a bridge the skinny Indian biker can not drive and I walk near the rickshaw to the top of the bridge (you pay him at the end of the trip!). He takes me to Najpat Nagar for 80 rupees! We talk a lot with Gunwar and George, we drink later in the night. Gunwar has a meeting and I can't stay with him. So I take my backpack and go with George at his home. On the way he takes me a hamburger from Mc Donald's and we wonder of the cinema line. I talk with his neighbor from Varanasi about the essence of life and i go to sleep before midnight!
