Ziua feroviară 23.12.2013 Fero-day

Wake up, Cezar, you have a new day in front of you! It's too early to go to the railway station. I turn left at one of the Hindu temples and go up to the central market. Here you can find the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, father of India, and Indira Gandhi, a panel with the history of the resort and Jesus catholic Church. I would like to go inside and the first service is tomorrow. I go down on narrow streets to Women park and near other historical buildings I go back to the center and the firemen station. Shimla is declared non-smoking locality (there is a formal 500 rupees penalty!), everybody is asked to be aware of the sneaky monkeys and near a park I see a panel on which is written that we must care for the garden of God that is everything that surrounds us. I am refreshed and go down to the station, I buy my ticket to Himalayan Queen Express to Kalka and wait for the departure. The toy train has 7 mini-coaches, 10 meters each and a mini-engine. These sizes are necessary for the legendary Kalka-Shimla line registered in UNESCO heritage. 105 tunnels, hundreds of bridges and curves, a big height difference (about 1800 meters between end stations)! 40 minutes before leaving the second class coaches (the first and the last one) are full. I am lucky with a group of boys who invite me to stay with them. They will feed me at one time, I talk with them and others about all and everything. At one time we are about 70 people in the couch (10 m long x 3 m width)! I have my eyes and my camera on the window between all stations! I continuously take pictures! In one of the stations (breakfast break) I take something to eat! For locals/Indians (these categories are different because a family I sit on a bench with came here after 5 years as tourists, the first time being the honeymoon!) all is boring. They don't see all details I am fascinated with! The train goes down from 2100 meters on ridges of jungle, goes around wooded pine ridges, goes down with a steep slope, goes through tunnels that i follow one by one. In one station we see the post train on the other line and all are thrilled. On the train i see two of the few Indian women that fascinated me with their presence: a mountain strong faced Indian woman looking  pensively on the window for 5-6 stations and a woman with a round face, small nose, a big smile on her face and a noise face in her lap! I am in the train and out of it! Seeing the toy trains of my childhood, i see from above all the curves and the tunnels, I see the jungle where the small fero-snake goes with a high speed (25-30 km/h)! It is a monument of engineering art similar to Anina-Oravița line! Viaduct bridges, shorter or longer tunnels... In every tunnel a lot of coach colleagues (only one big compartment!) scream as much as they can. I don't scream with them and I am excited by their exuberant joy. In five hours of going down, we reach Kalka on a secondary line. I don't have to much time between trains because in half an hour I have a train to Chandigarh. I buy a ticket and go up in a second class coach. The voyage is only 45 minutes long in the plain. I left the mountains! In the station I am hooked by an auto-ricshaw driver who takes me to a hotel close to the station. They don't have free rooms and we are sent to a new open hotel where I bargain for 1000 rupees/night! Imagine that they started from a bigger price! I stay for two night in a 4 stars hotel (to have a comparison with the western style). I let my big pack in the room and take the small one for a walk around. For the first time I choose to eat junk food: a different pizza from the European one and a 600 ml Mirinda from Pizza Hut! In the same indian chaos (which is familiar to me now!) I go around the hotel, eat some Indian specialties among them being Gulab Jamun sweet cakes and I go up in the room. A text from one panel stays in my mind: "Be good, do good, be one".

Plimbări scurte prin Shimla 22.12.2013 Short walks in Shimla

Mă trezesc și mă uit la ceas. E trei după-amiaza!

I wake up and check my telephone. It's 3 in the afternoon! I needed this sleep so much! Well, the out atmosphere made me sleepy. The rain has just stopped! When I arrived here yesterday evening, the bus stopped for two times to clean the blizzard snow of the front window! Now it's a mix of snow, water and a lot of fog. I hardly see for few tens of meters around! I don't have the mood to eat, I ask at the reception for the way to railway station, I think I understood and I will ask for a few times on the way. I go down to the railway station through the main market (near Railway station Central Office) and I see that there are four trains to Kalka every day. The first one leaves at 10.30. That's my train! I take the ticket tomorrow morning from the station. On the same way back I try to visit Gorton palace built almost 100 years ago in a gothic indian style. I can visit only the out side, there are lawyers' offices inside. I take a lassi plastic bag, two boxes of juice, a fruit cake and some sweet toasted bread. That's all I can eat! I go up to the hotel (I go down to the hotel and up in the room), eat somthing, I don't have the power to write in the journal and go to sleep.

Varietăți din Dharamshala în Shimla 21.12.2013 Variety from Dharamshala to Shimla

Maybe I should have stayed more time in Dharamshala... Now I know what to base on for the next times! I start my way to indian Sinaia. I choose a sinuous way because I discovered an unique place in my guides: the rock-cut temples from Masrur! I associated them in my mind with Angkor Wat cambodian temples! With a Kangra bus I go down to Gaggal (where is an airport here?) and I start to go by walking to the temples. I don't really understand the orientation of indians. They always indicated me (now also) the longest way to my point! I go from the center to Pathankot over a bridge and after a few hundreds of meters I turn left on Kathala Mata Road (I tell you this for orientation, I didn't know this name at that time!) following the temples signs. In the first village I find a christian school with a big Jesus above the main entrance! I walk for another kilometer and wait for a bus in a local station. It should come at 11.30! An indian local sees a friend with a transport big car (All India Permit) and I go with them for 15 kilometers on a rammed road on the ridges of wooden hills (beautiful Himachal!). On Tiara Road and Gaggal Road they drop me on the road because they go down to a factory in the valley. I go for some tens of meters and after a bridge an unexpected bus takes me to Lunj. Lunch break and we go further to Masrur! I told them that I want to go to the temples and they drop me at a 3 kilometers paved road to the temples (after Lalahpur). With my backpack I start my travel on the asphalt from the jungle! The road takes me between ruins, trees and lianas up on the temples' hill. Their detailed sculpture, the reason of every temple (northern, southern eastern, western) and the care they have to wash the temples with water from the holy pool are very interesting! For the visit I pay 100 rupees (for foreigners, 5 rupees for locals). I don't stay to much and, searching for temple framework images, I find myself on paths that go through the jungle. Some boys guide me to the road (other path dissapear in the  "dangerous" jungle) and I go down to the road that I came on earlier. I walk for a few hundreds of meters over passing 3 pupils in uniforms and a school bus takes me to Lunj. Two sandwiches made on the street and I go with two buses to Ranital and Kangra! A lot of crowd, a lot of peddlers, street restaurants and insistent indians! Don't be fooled to buy everything they offer you overpriced! I talk to my mother on the indian Airtel SIM card and she is so happy for the call! She didn't expect me to call her! I go up on the road to Kangra Fort (and Old Kangra) with monkeys near the road. I explore the fort with its gates and temples, take photos with all the groups who want this (photos with the monkey!) and I go back to the bus stop with a transport ricshaw! I eat something at a street restaurant and go with a night bus to Shimla. The road is sinuous as all the roads in the area and the 220 kilometers are long and hard because we go up to Shimla situated at 2100 m altitude. With a dinner break in Bilaspur, we go up to indian Sinaia, the preferred resort of the english colonialists. I have a place to lay down, I feel sick and I vomit just before reaching Shimla. Something normal for indians! I am so tired and I let myself driven by a porter to a hotel where I pay 770 rupees for one night! I decide to stay here for two night to feel better. Somewhere around 3.00 a.m. I go to sleep in the inner sleeping bag under the thick blanket.
