Niilampää 28.11.2018

Prima zi liberă (day off)...

The first day off... Obviously I can't stay inside! I wake up later and let my body sleep as much as he wants. I wake up around 10.00 and I am ready to go around 12.00. If you remember last year on December 26th I reached Niilampää from Kiilopää (http://cezarpart.blogspot.com/2018/03/niilampaa-26122017.html) and I wanted to sleep a night there. I didn't have a winter sleeping bag at that time, now I have one and I know that I will have some days off at the end of December and beginning of January and I want to see how much time it takes me from Kiltamaja (where I live now) to Niilampää.

As I said, I leave around 12.00 on -8...-10 Celsius degrees. It is light and acceptable. First I follow car roads to east (Perkkatie and Rukkastie) and enter the ski track to Tievatuvantie. At Tievatupa I don't enter at my colleagues and I want to see how is the sauna here. It is a separate building close to the river (river diving between hot sauna sessions). The building is closed and they open with money for minimum 15 people. On Tievatuvantie I let Muotkan Maja on right and on walking/ski tracks (no tracks yet, too less snow), exit the ski track that follows Kakslauttanen river to Sivakkaoja fireplace. From here I turn right on Ruijanpolku to the walking/ski track that will take me to Niilampää. The landscape is amazing and the sunset is spectacular. There is still light at 15.05 when I reach the cabin (three hours of walking)!

Niilampää is one of the places where the reindeer herds gather in autumn and the owners take their animals. Each animal is marked and the job is pretty easy. Now I see a reindeer herd in the special yard. I enter the cabin, enjoy the warm and write in the cabin's guest book. Below you can read the living rules in the finnish cabins.

1. Your backpack is to be kept outside the cabin. Do not bring liquid or gas fuel in to the cabin.

2. Check that the stove is OKand it's empty of ashes before you light a fire. Be careful when handling fire and put it out when you leave the cabin. If you find any defects, mention about it in the guest book.

3. Use firewood sparingly. Chop at least the same amount of firewood you've used. Making of ”kiehinen”, curly wood chips for lightning a fire, is a nice gesture for next visitors.

4. Write down your name, the date of your visit and your plans for the next days to the guest book. These informations help in case you need to be searched for.

5. When you leave empty the water, rubbish and compost buckets. A decent hiker carries his own rubbish out of the park. Close the gas stove and the gas bottle faucet. Do not leave food to be spoiled or eaten by voles.

6. Leave the cabin and its environs in a better shape that they were before your arival!

After about 40 minutes of staying here (time goes faster when it's cold), I close everything and start on the walking/ski/snowmobile track to Kiilopää. I know it from the last year!

In about one hour I reach Kiilopää and the memories from the last year come together. I stop them in some way, enter in the reception, take some pics at the lappish seasons and go down to the sauna for the wanted relaxation. Now I am like home, the 6 km to Kiltamaja are a child game that I solve after one hour of relaxing.

As I was saying, last evening I received a message about starting of work. And it starts with a preparation day.

Here are our reindeers/horses who help us do our jobs!

We continue to work and in the evening Marcelo is happy to drink a beer with JC (Jesus Christ). I got this nickname last year. Are you curious why?

On 26th we work a lot and I have time for a few pics.

27 starts as usually. In the second pic you see a normal working temperature. There were some days with a few degrees around zero and a few under -20 degrees. The usual is between -10 and -20 degrees. And you don't feel them with proper clothes!

You see below the restaurant and the pancake tent (pancake kota), places where we warm ourselves from time to time.

In the evening the temperature goes down a lot (you can see on termometers, on the round one at the entrance of the cabin the temperature is on the out circle). We are amazed of what can happen. We go out and throw up boiled water: it freezes instantly and falls down as an ice powder!

More we see on the app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrustonapps.myauroraforecast&hl=en_US) that it is highly probable to see the northern lights. We don't wait, dress up and go out after Aurora cabins on the bridge and then in an area with a frozen swamp. Marcelo had been there in his first days here and saw the northern lights. And we have a lot to see (thanks Marcelo for the patience to take pics on this cold)! On the way back I take some pics (I don't have a capable camera for northern lights, the pics are made by Marcelo) and you can see my beard at -20 degrees!

Ivalo-Saariselkä-Kiltamaja 24.11.2018

Ro:

En:

Flight to Lapland, more exactly to Ivalo (I think it is the northernmost commercial airport)... Yes, my friends, Lapland exists! It is not only that kids stories magical place, with reindeers, elves and Santa Claus/Father Christmas. All of these are real. I even tell some pre-details by telling you that all were my colleagues. And it is the second year, I know exactly what I have to do.

Starting with the first day I see big differences comparing to last year: I have new and old colleagues. Our coordinator, the sweddish Ulrika, is very cool (she replaced the good Henkka from last year) and she is totally different comparing to last season. Maybe she is the same and the post she has makes her different. Or she was like this all the time! This is a proof that we should never judge people according to the conjuncture. I know some of the colleagues and some are new... All will prove (I'm talking about the same housing colleagues) that we become a family in a very short time.

I enjoy the last days with sun, I get the linen from the office (as it is in the info mail) and I am driven (by car) to Kiltamaja cabin where I will live for all the period. Last year we were moved on December 31st in another location, now we'll find that we stay here until January 6th. Kiltamaja is a cabin between Kakslauttanen (hotel complex) and Tievatupa, another housing for us. We were moved last year from Kiilopää to Tievatupa... We are closer to Kakslauttanen (10 minutes walking) than Tievatupa (25-30 minutes). Even if I seem to praise the cabin, it is not my intention. I can say that, except the Laanila housing for some colleagues for the first two weeks, it is the best housing until now: a lot of common space, enough private space, big kitchen, sauna, drying rooms, big room/space in front of the cabin, fireplace, small distance to Kiilopääntie street and the main one!

With shyness I meet my colleagues and due to Marcelo I accomodate fast with all of them. In the evening I get a message asking if I can work tomorrow. Yes. of course! And so the season starts...

Vantaa 23.11.2018

It's the start of the second season in Lapland... I have a 20 hours break in Helsinki before going up to north. In fact the airport is not in Helsinki, it is in Vantaa. Vantaa, Helsinki and Espoo cities form the Helsinki metropolis. It is light when I get out of the airport and with the two backpacks (14 kg + 6-7 kg) I decide to reach the first closest national park Sipoonkorpi (Sipoonkorven kansallispuisto). I should walk about 15 km, it shouldn't be a problem.

I follow Google Maps, get out of the airport, at the first cross I turn left and get out of the street on a rocky area (it reminds me of Lenin park and all Helsinki), come back to the street and follow the indications... At Koivuhaka arboretum/Koivuhaan puulajipuisto (coordinates 60.304804, 25.007873) I get of the road and up on the alleys. It is a nice lighted park, with garbage bins and protection nets for the trees (for not being destroyed by animals). I go to Kvesvedstranden area and I pass the road through an under tube to a long green area with a few houses taking me from Simonkylaa to Ruskeasanta.

It is getting dark and I don't see to much. I saw a lake on the map somewhere around and changed my destination/understood that the national park is hard to reach in a few hours with all the weight. And more it is dark and nothing to see... The lake is nice and a bit frozen, I pass near by and wander in the park-forest before going back to the airport on small streets.

At the airport I have the surprise to meet Perica, a croatian who lived a few years in Romania and is naturalizing step by step. He works in the same company with me, in a different location. So I offer him some "unsaid" info and we keep in touch. In the morning both have planes to north (Lapland...)
