Maroc - 19-30.08.2016 - Madrid, a unsprezecea zi/the eleventh day 30.08.2016

As I said, I received a fly and subscribe on net to a free tour of three hours (starting at 11.00). Ștefan chooses solo walking and me at least half of this tour. We wake up at 10.00, eat breakfast and on walking. We set to speak on the phone and meet back at the hostel or at the airport depending on hour.

I enter through Plaza del Callao in the walking zone on Calle del Carmen, I am asked by some girls if I want to donate for a UNICEF cause and reach Puerta del Sol quite fast. At the statue of the bear I identify the guide Fernando, a very nice mexican who will take us on the streets of Madrid (the site is madride.net and you can find more details there). Until 11.00 I make some pictures in place Puerta del Sol. Puerta del Sol is the only one named like this, the others are Plaza. It is said that Puerta del Sol is in the middle of Spain and it was initially the eastern gate of the city. At 11.00 sharp we are in front of the statue to listen its story. The first kings who came here found a huge forest and the bear was the symbol of the power of the one who hunted him. I won't bore you with the history of Madrid because you can find it everywhere. I will just tell you some spicy details that I remember from Fernand :)! We make the group photo and go on  Mrgin of the place where we present each other. Of course we forget the others' names in a few seconds :D!

Biserica își are originea în sec.

We pass the statue of king Carlos III with pigeons and get some infos about the coat of arms from the pedestal, pass statue of Mariblanca, the only left from the fountain Mariblanca or Fountain of Faith and supposed to relate to fertility goddeess Venus or Fortuna, enter Calle de Arenal and stop for a few minutes in front of the church of San Gines de Arles. The church origins in XII century, passed three fires and has the today aspect from the reform of XVIII century. San Gines de Arles was a military notary beheaded in  303/308 e.n. because he refused to transcript the Diocletian's edict of persecution. Further on right on Calle de las Hileras you can see the oldest chocolaterie of Madrid, Los Artesanos (1902)! On Calle de las Hileras (Street of Lines) the cattle were taken in line to the market.

A short break for nneds before entering Plaza de Isabel II/Plaza de la Opera where we can see the opera and I ask Fernando about tapas. Details about tapas later on! Plaza was, until XVII century a place for colectting waters and a place of clothes washers. Queen Isabel II of Spain, daughter of king Ferdinand VII of Spain, was declared regent queen at three years old and married at 16 with her cousin, prince Ferdinand I de Assis de Bourbon. Fernando told us more intrigues of that time, I don't remember them all and it has no sense to bore you with wikipedia details. It is supposed that the two children weren't made with Ferdinand because he was gay. You can observe from the statue that Isabel wasn't beautiful, but her blue eyes gave her an unique expression. Well, her life was complicated and is not of interest here. Fernando tells us a spicy detail about king Ferdinand. It is said that he had a very rare genetic disease: uretra against nature. You can imagine this, I don't give you medical details!

Before leaving plaza, we check for the big prices of the tickets for famous opera plays and Fernando tells us that you can find sometimes very cheap accesible tickets here!

On the left of the opera we follow Calle de Vergara and turn right at Toro Tapas near the opera on Calle Carlos III to Plaza de Oriente. ”My house is behind me :D! I am kidding, of course”. He is talking about Palacio Real de Madrid, one of the most wide spread buildings in the spanish capital. You can see the numerous statues on the building and Fernando gathers us under the shaddow of the trees in Plaza de Ote. He shows us and tells us some stories about the first roman ans spanish kings and about the statue of Felipe IV in the center of the place. Few details about the statue! Although Felipe died in battle (this is represented with one foot of the horse on land), he wanted a statue as the one of his father Felipe III from Plaza Mayor de Madrid. Because it was too big and unstable, the statue was modified accoring to the plans of Galileo Galilei. Thus for stability you can see that the back of the horse is bigger and more solide (back feet and tail very big) and the head is small and disproportionate. Felipe didn't observed this detail and liked the statue.

We turn left near Palacio Real and in Plaza de la Armeria I loose the explanations of Fernando. I make pictures to Catedral de Santa Maria de Real de la Almudena and the interior court of Palacio Real, similar to the ones of Castle of Prague/Prazsky Hrad or Buckingham Palace of London. I reach the group near the Archdiocese of Madrid and the Neoromanic Crypt of the Cathedral, pass Calle Mayor and at Calle de Segovia we turn right in the park to sit on stairs for other explanations. They are about moorish period which from we can find many words in actual spanish language. In the direction of the cathedral we can see moorish walls and Fernando gives us some details. I tell him about the connection of romanian and spanish languages and he is amazed! On leaving I make a picture to the statue of the elegant lady with violets and stay behind the group.

On Calle de la Moreria we pass Corral de la Moreria, one of the most famous flamenco locals. You know the famous spanish dances! We pass the church of San Andreas (on the royal march street) and stop behind it in Plaza de la Paja. The inclined place is interesting and here was a big point of commerce. Now you can only see some modern statues for the tourists' delight!

Later we find the garden of principe de Anglona and I enter for a few pictures. The garden was built in 1761 by Chalmandrier above a historical siteand had a lot of famous owners like count XI de Benavente, Antonio Alfonso Pimentel y Herrara Ponce de Leon who inherited the garden in the marriage with Isabel de Benavides, the daughter of marquis de Javalquinto y Villareal. The garden is inherited of many important families and is modified in time and open for public in 2002! (info from the information panel).

On Calle Principe Anglona we reach the church of San Pedro el Viejo and on Calle Nuncio (Route of Marriages) we reach Calle de Segovia and then on Calle de Cucilleros (Route of Cookers) we reach restaurant Sobrino de Botin Horno de Asar. Fernando praise the restaurant as being the oldest restaurant in the world. It was founded in 1725 by frenchman Jean Botin and his wife near Cava Baja with the name Hosteria Botin. I let him say the story and later I tell him about the oldest inn (found by me)is Stiftskeller in Salzburg (Austria) from 803! He says that maybe there wasn't the same functionality all the time and here it belonged to the same family and functioned all the time as inn. Whatever! He wanted to point the fact that in Madrid all the places with the same functionality more than 100 years have a symbolic plate at the entrance!

We pass hostel La Macarena (remember the song?) and stop near the market Mercado de San Miguel for a lunch break of 15 minutes. I thank Fernando with a small tip and follow his indications to the hostel to take the baggage. I pass Calle Mayor, near Plaza de Herradores I follow Calle de las Fuentes and Calle de las Hileras and from Plaza de San Martin I reach Plaza de Callao on Calle del Postigo de San Martin. Meaning home!

I go up to the hostel, in one minute Ștefan enters also, we take the baggages, thank for hosting and go down in the street to Callao metro station. From here, in reverse way, we take line 5 to Alonso Martinez, line 4 to Mar de Cristal and line 8 to the airport. We are here in time to make all necessary operations for the flight at 16.10 to Bucharest (20.50, a little more than 3.5 hours of flight).

Time goes fast when I speak with the colleague on the wondow seat. He works as driver in Spain and tells me all his story as a driver. We change impressions about our country, about the places above we fly... The lights in the night announce us that we enters Romania in some way from Serbia and fly fat to Otopeni.

Nice flight and we are safely home! Memories will settle in time...

Salaam aleycum!

Maroc - 19-30.08.2016 - a zecea zi/the tenth day 29.08.2016

Today is the day of leaving... Time flows fast and we enjoy the breakfast on the superior terrace of the riad (8.30). I just go down to take some condiments on Youssef's advice. Do you remember that I told you about a condiment store when we first came to Marrakech? Youssef tells me that it is very expensive and guide me to a locals' condiments store in the souk near us. At the store everybody is curious about me when I ask for 100 g of this, of that, of that... At the end I receive a bonus: a little box of saffron! I am very happy with my aquisition and at the riad I have to see how to carry all condiments and tea for not looking like drugs. I put them in the hand baggage to be able to open and show them to all who ask for this. We pack everything, make some pictures with the staff of the riad. All are very, very nice! We change facebook addresses, salute as brothers and start the way at 12.30.

”Come with me”.

At the first cross we take a taxi direct to airport. The driver doesn"t know too much english and we are ok with this. At about 13.00 we are at the airport, a lot of time before our flight (18.05). Better sooner than later! We take a trolley for backpacks, a juice or water to spend the last dirhams, find a free weighing to check the baggages. I probably loose down my passport without noticing this. We stay on a bench and in about 20 minutes we hear something like ”Cezar, engineer”. We don't associate and a policeman comes to me ands tell me  my name and ”Come with me”. I go with him, he asks me details, I legitimate with the ID card and show me the passport. I am reliefed! I made a mistake and it is solved!

We visit the stores from the airport, make the last pictures (batteries are almost off, I will take some new batteries from Madrid) in a traditional souvenir store, at around 16.30 we pass the control gates and we are at the embarking gate. At 17.15-17.30 we go up in the plane and fly at the established hour.

Salaam aleycum, Maroc!

The flight takes two hours along Morrocco, Gibraltar, high mountains in south of Spain and lower in the center and land on dark on Barajas airport of Madrid. OK flight! We take the baggages and go out to city.

We studied the problem (not enough) and take bus 200 to Avenida de America. The distance seems long and it can be easily done by metro! We go dowm to metro, study a map, take cards to Gran Via. We knew that we have to reach Gran Via, 44. With line 4 (brown) we go in Arguelles direction to Alonso Ramirez and change with line 5 (green) in direction Casa de Campo. We could go one more station to Callao!

We walk on Gran Via until we identify number 44 (more hostels at different floors of a former hospital), take the room and after few minutes of relaxation we go out around. To see Madrid!

On calle Gran Via we go down absorbed in the agitation of a big city, we drink some beer and eat at a street restaurant close to Plaza de Espana and wander on the streets around. The time doesn't matter, we want to know the area where we stay. And more to find a Carrefour or something for breakfast and batteries. We find a Carrefour Express on Calle de Montera, street/place with prostituates accosting clients almost in public. There might be roumaian girls here, we talked with low voice! We wander around on smaller or bigger streets, make pictures with statues or buy fruits in small stores and aroud 2.00 a.m. we are back at the hostel where, after one shower, sleep deeply.

For tomorrow I found a free tour with four hours (I can go only two to catch the plane). Ștefan prefers to walk unguided to discover some of Madrid, we will let the baggages at the hostel and meet there or at the airport. We can talk at the phone because we have extremely small tariff in Europe!
