Niilampää 28.11.2018

Prima zi liberă (day off)...

The first day off... Obviously I can't stay inside! I wake up later and let my body sleep as much as he wants. I wake up around 10.00 and I am ready to go around 12.00. If you remember last year on December 26th I reached Niilampää from Kiilopää (http://cezarpart.blogspot.com/2018/03/niilampaa-26122017.html) and I wanted to sleep a night there. I didn't have a winter sleeping bag at that time, now I have one and I know that I will have some days off at the end of December and beginning of January and I want to see how much time it takes me from Kiltamaja (where I live now) to Niilampää.

As I said, I leave around 12.00 on -8...-10 Celsius degrees. It is light and acceptable. First I follow car roads to east (Perkkatie and Rukkastie) and enter the ski track to Tievatuvantie. At Tievatupa I don't enter at my colleagues and I want to see how is the sauna here. It is a separate building close to the river (river diving between hot sauna sessions). The building is closed and they open with money for minimum 15 people. On Tievatuvantie I let Muotkan Maja on right and on walking/ski tracks (no tracks yet, too less snow), exit the ski track that follows Kakslauttanen river to Sivakkaoja fireplace. From here I turn right on Ruijanpolku to the walking/ski track that will take me to Niilampää. The landscape is amazing and the sunset is spectacular. There is still light at 15.05 when I reach the cabin (three hours of walking)!

Niilampää is one of the places where the reindeer herds gather in autumn and the owners take their animals. Each animal is marked and the job is pretty easy. Now I see a reindeer herd in the special yard. I enter the cabin, enjoy the warm and write in the cabin's guest book. Below you can read the living rules in the finnish cabins.

1. Your backpack is to be kept outside the cabin. Do not bring liquid or gas fuel in to the cabin.

2. Check that the stove is OKand it's empty of ashes before you light a fire. Be careful when handling fire and put it out when you leave the cabin. If you find any defects, mention about it in the guest book.

3. Use firewood sparingly. Chop at least the same amount of firewood you've used. Making of ”kiehinen”, curly wood chips for lightning a fire, is a nice gesture for next visitors.

4. Write down your name, the date of your visit and your plans for the next days to the guest book. These informations help in case you need to be searched for.

5. When you leave empty the water, rubbish and compost buckets. A decent hiker carries his own rubbish out of the park. Close the gas stove and the gas bottle faucet. Do not leave food to be spoiled or eaten by voles.

6. Leave the cabin and its environs in a better shape that they were before your arival!

After about 40 minutes of staying here (time goes faster when it's cold), I close everything and start on the walking/ski/snowmobile track to Kiilopää. I know it from the last year!

In about one hour I reach Kiilopää and the memories from the last year come together. I stop them in some way, enter in the reception, take some pics at the lappish seasons and go down to the sauna for the wanted relaxation. Now I am like home, the 6 km to Kiltamaja are a child game that I solve after one hour of relaxing.
