Ziua muzeelor din Dehradun 16.01.2014 Museums' day in Dehradun

"Bine!"

In the morning Sanjay don't seem to hurry even if he has to go to work. He prepares me a very good porridge and I doze a little longer. later I'll go to the institute and see what I can visit there. I enjoy the porridge on the step of the door looking to the garden, clean a bit the room (for my habit of not letting a place too chaotic) and head to the institute. Sanjay comes at the gate, I register in the gate register and wait for an approval of a superior researcher. The paper doesn't come and Sanjay propose me to come later when he hopes to solve it. There were some incident with outsiders and therefore so much bureaucracy! "Are you sure you don't mind for not showing the institute" "It's ok, i go to forest institute and come later! Just tell me the way!" "From the exit of the institute you turn right, at the first roundabout you turn left and you'll find the institute on the right!" "Thanks. Talk later!" "Fine!"

I follow my friends' indications, turn left at the roundabout on Chakrata Road, a boulevard with high trees on the margins and see indicative signs to FRI (Forest Research Institute). It's the good way! On the way i enter on the left side in a greenhouse where from you can buy flowers (I enter just for seeing!). It's very nice and I see the flowers in the gardens of "my" neighborhood. On the right side I pass a ceramic pots merchant. Temptations! I reach the main gate of the institute and it is closed. Some young topographers prepare their theodolite for measurements, I ask for the entrance and they show me the Trevor Road gate a few hundreds meters in front of me. I go to the entrance and pay the small amount of 5 rupees for the ticket! I shoot the map of the institute (incomplete in the northern part!) and I'll use it as a guide for a few hours from now! i want to reach the main building as fast as possible for the museums (they are told to be fine!). I walk on Trevor Road between deodars and lianas. On the both sides of the street we see offices and houses of the researchers. At a small roundabout I ass a small rover and turn right on Wilmot Road. On the left I pass Officers' Club  and I want to enter on Tackle Road on right. It is private and forbidden, I manage to take some photos in the pine wood near the road, go further to Brandis Road (between the main gate and the main building) and from here I turn left to the museums. The park is very fine and relaxing and I stay for a few minutes on the grass. I get close to the main building which hosts the 6 sections of the forest museum. You can find online information about FRI, but I didn't read about the combination of Greek columns and the two Moorish towers!

You enter the museums after paying a ticket. I pass the pathology section and find the ticket office behind the main building. 25 rupees for the all sections ticket! I see the pathology section before 1 o'clock (13.00-13.30 lunch break). In this section you can see different tree diseases (including fungi and parasitic plants) and the phots are forbidden. I find some hidden angles for some pictures!

Grădina asta mi-a făcut fericităziua!

I want to enter Social Forestry Museum and it"s closed for the break. So I go for a walk in the park behind the main building. What can I do because I can't stay just as that! On Howard and Schlich Road I see an old British red postal point. Near this point I see on the left an area with a lot of dry leaves and a bunch of high bamboo trees. Tempting? A thought is passing inside me: be careful of snakes and I just let him pass (I have sandals!). I go in the middle of high stems and look above me with admiration. Natural straight poles closing to the top like tapering African or Italian houses (like Oblio!) (search for Alberobello or Locorotondo on the net; I saw some pictures on the blog of a traveler). I go out of the bamboo house and between the trees I reach a small paved alley with a bamboo plantation-museum on the other side. There's no locker at the gate and I sneak inside on paved alleys. All kinds and sizes of bamboos, thorny bamboos, 20-25 cm thick stems (as big as my palm!), thin stems bamboos, bamboos used for houses, boats, buildings, paper... Light beams among the strong stems... I walk all the ways around and it's speechless. This garden made me happy for the whole day! It's only one of such moments! I let you enjoy some images and feel yourself there!

The alleys guide me over bridges between bamboo bunches to a gate in the south-east corner of the garden. It has a locker and I ask a guardian from the other side "How can I go out of here?" "You know, you are not allowed inside" "Well, I am inside, how can I go out? Jump over the fence?" "You are not allowed. We make an exception this time!" I jump over the fence and go to the main building through the park between groups layed on the grass. I enter the big corridors between museum halls and enter to entomology museum. they don't let me take pictures and I get the accept for it when I tell them that i work in the field and give them details about bees and termites. "Hide from other visitors!" I am fascinated  with the details about each species of plants and parasites. I could stay here for a long time! Happy with these pictures, I go to the next museum: Non wood forest products museum! It's all about forest products used in alternative medicin: flowers, branches, bark, resins, flavors... They don't let me take pictures and almost kick me out! "Well if you don't let me take pictures, what kind of commercial can I make for you?" I go to timber museum and I am not let to take pictures. I "steal" the picture of an old 700 years cedar trunk! For the next two sections I get the stamps/perforations from one guy: Silviculture (forest levels, forest work, Indian and British instruments) and Social forestry (uses of wood in human society). I see a qoute of Indira Gandhi for sustaining of nature helping activities.

Oau, chiar muzeele astea merită orice apreciere!

Oau, these museums worth every appreciation! They are classic and shabby, but the information is impressive! I go out of the main building enchanted of all museums, go on Brandis Road, admire once again the beauty of the park and reach Wilmot Road at the earlier roundabout. I have to follow another way! I choose to turn back on the private Laurie Road to the end of Trevor Road. It's so quiet here that you wouldn't go out in the city! I go out on the same gate and take a bus on Chakrata Road to the big roundabout and right to the institute. I pay the ticket on the way and go down of the bus at the institute. I call Sanjay, enter with them to the cafeteria and clean some mails while they have some work to do. Later Sanjay offers himself as a guide to geology museum (you are not allowed to take pictures and he will take some from hidden angles). He tells me about Himalayan rocks, fluorescent rocks, area geology and finally about the researches of D.N.Wadia, the founder geologist of the institute. The exposed geologist bag remind of my grandfather. The same poky researcher with a mountain of information and spirituality inside! We go out after writing a comment in the museum's impression book and receiving a flyer of the institute and another one with earthquake prevention and actions.

Before leaving home (for dinner) we assist at a badminton game and I meet some colleagues of my friends. We take some food and condiments for home (cheap and recommended by Sanjay) and Arun is waiting for us at the exit. On the way home I remember that i don't have toilet paper (useless for Indians!) and enter with Arun in the supermarket to take some paper and nice aromatic cones. In the evening we chat for some time and right before going to bed, Sanjay offers me some gifts for me and Raluca (very nice of him!). Good night!

A simple day can change you for life! What can be a "common" road of a few hours from Uttarkashi to Dehradun? If material changes are not so big, the spiritual ones and reformulation of own dimensions are surely bigger and more important.

In the morning I salute my hosts (the boys from the hotel sleeping on the tables from the restaurant) and go to search for the bus to Dehradun. The bus belongs to a "state company" and it's the only bus trip with ticket! With seat reservation! Last evening I talked to an Indian from Dehradun to go down together and I didn't see him at the bus. No problem! I am used with the change of people! I take my ticket, go up in the bus on another seat and then on mine (to respect the seats on the tickets)! My friend comes and later on the road he will make place for me in the driver's cockpit! We leave around 6.20. Temporal relativity!

We leave before the beginning of the day on the road we came. First we go up on the stone road and a woman puts her head out and vomits. We pass Dharasu and I see that the driver turns right on a different road than two days ago. And the road goes up. And up, and up! At one moment the sun rises in a red circle that keeps me centered on it! I start to reformulate myself. What I knew about mountain roads (including the one two days ago) becomes senseless. The road goes after mountain feet and earns altitude. It look like we are going in dark valley or we are going on mountain ridges and you feel like you're flying of the curve. The driver has a constant speed, the luggage stays fixed on the bus. I feel more and more relaxed, although every curve makes me anxious. We are going for some time and in Wan we have two short curves. Some people are going down here (where might they go?). We pass under the houses and the pile of Gewhoti. The road is going in a wood tunnel and at one moment the driver turns left from the main road (to Dandalgaon). "It's a new road!" (On Google Maps it's a link road). From this point you can't follow any map because the roads don't exist on maps. We go up on a desert mountain range up to 2000 meters and go down in a glacial cirque. The places are amazing and I turn my head allover all the time. The size of mountains modify my criteria of the size of nature. At one moment my friend shows me (I'm in the cockpit now!) the 5000 meters mountain ranges! They look so small and far (covered with ice and snow, everything is dry here!) and we seem to be higher. I didn't have this experience: the 5000 mountains seem smaller that the 2000 meters where we are now! We go down in the cirque and pass on the left side with long curves. In one turn we have to wait for the working cars to go of the road. The road is digged in the rock! I know I repeat myself but I continuously reformulate myself on this road! We go down on a secondary river and stop at 1.30 for breakfast. My friend (they call themselves brothers!) offers me a noodle soup and a tea. And I resolve my problems at a Turkish toilet. This detail is not nice but I mention it because it is one of the few public Turkish toilets in the mountains! We continue in some villages and I see school girls proud of their school suits. I cancel my thoughts about the way we are going. The only way to follow the road is a GPS! We go up in the wood on one lane asphalt road and reach the highest part of Mussoorie area (the last picture below) in Suwakholi are (I guess!). We are at 2200 meters in Dehradun's resort!

We turn east in all the resort and leave it on the right (with a two kilometer road to center). We turn left on Mussoorie Road and go down to the plain. I know we still have two hours down to Dehradun. Because I have nothing else to do, I admire the 4 lane road and the endless curves. My friend announce me wheen we are close to town and we change the phone numbers. "In case you need something, just call me, ok?" He goes of in Kishanpur at the beginning of the city and I go to center to Mussoorie bus stand. Back to dirty Indian plain! I go off the bus, take a glass of sugar crane juice and call Sanjay. I don't know how to explain where i am and he asks me ti ask a nice person to guide me (they are speaking in their language). Two young boys understand my destination and with a cop woman search for no. 5 vikram (the rickshaws I told you about). Only in Dehradun the rickshaws are called vikrams and go on fixed lines! They don't find the line and agrees with Sanjay to rent a rickshaw to the institute! Sanjay is paying my driver! I go to the institute, eat with them at the cantine, go with Sanjay (as a guide) in the institute (as much as bureaucracy allows) and drives me with the motorbike to Arun's place to take my big pack and relax. We walk to Sanjay's home in a few hours to leave my pack. On the way they buy something ti eat and they will prepare the dinner (Sanjay, Raitam and Arun). We chat and I enjoy the atmosphere. They try to teach me how to eat with the hand and they fail (or I don't admit the new experiment!). Sanjay has a mattress on the floor, a small table and a simple room rent on the back side of a villa with a diverse garden in the back of the house (in front of the Sanjay's door). It is very fine and you don't feel the time passing!
