Maroc 19-30.08.2016 - ziua a cincea/day 5 24.08.2016

After two days of high mountains we decide to go down. I mentioned about the idea of staying one more day on the mountain with a night at Lepiney/Tazaghart shelter at 3000, in the north of Biguinousenne (it could be another 4000 summit) and all the ”advices” of our hosts determined us to give up. So we only have to go down to Imlil, Marrakech and (hope and wish) Essaouira. From mountain to the (big) sea!

We wake up at 8.00, pack the bagagges, eat breakfast and are ready in front of the shelter at 9.20. There is a group of carriers with donkeys now restilng... The first pictures of the day and on the way down on the path we trekked three days ago.

The path goes down light and the first break is at the terrace at 2800. We were feeling too warm, put some clothes in the backpack, drink juice from the ”rainbow-fridge” and remember that we said about buying something from here. The seller also remembers and give us a lot of offers. We deal for a T-shirt for each of us with the favourite colors. A guide from the shelter (the one that we followed on the way to Toubkal) talk with me and tells me details. The clients were tired and decided to go back at the yellow band. I understand that it is good to help the locals by buying something from them.

Down to the valley and the next break will be at the mosque at 2350m. We salute the group with the guide who were resting at a terrace.

When we reach the terrace at 2200, we take a break and we are remembered to buy something. He offers us all kind of rocks and small statues and finally we deal for some berber turbans. With only one condition: he must show us how to make the turban to us to know how to make it later! I choose a blue one (different nuances) and Ștefan a violet one. I look carefully to the way of doing it and I will repeat it in the future. He can't sell us statues (Ștefan saw a beautiful one) and only an orange juice each. He is satisfied and we are satisfied too!

The path takes us to known terraces and when we enter the rocky meadow of Assif Mizane river (dry now) we ask some locals to takea picture with both of us. We are so proud with turbans and we deserve a group picture at the end of climbing trip :D!

We pass the river meadow, reach the road and go down to the bridge to Aremd. Let's go on the bridge and go down on the other side of the river, at the limit of the village. There seems to be no way forward and intuition tells me that we are on the good road. We go up on the street and then down asking always for the way to Imlil. We are directed to a small street going out of the village in a green area. There is only a small path that takes us to left in a culoir deepened between trees full of leaves, then on bends and we reach a small street that guides us to the main asphalt in Imlil (14.10).

We are in civilization! It looks like this for me, this was in India everywhere! On asphalt we go down to left between more or less curious people. Each of them wants to sell us something or guide to the taxi station. We don't need this, it's easy, we just have to follow the road! We stop at the guides center to let the poles (I have to promise that I will visit the man who rented me the poles) and write the return date in the register.

A little more down we reach the Grand Taxi station and people come to us to take us to Marrakech. We negociate the price that we knew from the coming trip and we start the trip to the city.

The road is the same. The big difference in the driver doesn't know english or french. Just a few words to understand each other! Ștefan tries to convince him to take us to the bus station (in english), I try in french and nothing. He knows that his way ends at Grand Taxi station and will stop there (around 16.00). He is inspired to put some traditional music on the radio and I registrate it. I just let you some images from the trip and continue further with the details!

I am convinced that the distance to bus station is short and Ștefan insists to take a taxi. He is right because there is some distance with the backpacks on this heat! He deals for 30 dh and the driver let us at the entry of Supr@tours bus station. We read on internet that from here we have bus to Essaouira. We entry in the cool bus station and sit at a table in the coffee place. We ask for one tea each and ask for price and the ticket place (we are offerred some hash). There are no places at 17.00, only at 19.00 (80dh)! So we take tickets and come back to the table. We have about two hours here, each of us in his own way. On turn we walk in the bus station, in the train station and the streets nearby (Ștefan finds a place to change some money). I even find wireless at a terrace out of the train station!

At around 18.30 we are near the bus. ”You have to take ticket for baggage!” They show us where ti take those tickets from (5dh /big baggage). We are upset because we weren't told this and get in the bus. The wheels start at 19.00 and for about 3 1/2 hours we have to see the landscape. I am lucky with a guy who offer me the password from his wireless network and I don't exagerate for saving the battery. We get out of the city in Casablanca direction, then to the left on the highway to Agadir and in about 50 kilometers to the right on smaller roads. With about one hour before Essaouira we stop for half an hour to a fast-food restaurant. Ștefan eats something, I don't need now! After getting dark we reach Essaouira in Supr@tours bus station after passing the modern half of the city. Only the last 20 kilometers before Essaouira are green, the rest in desert!

No, acu'i acu'!

E perfect! Un duș rapid și la somn! Mâine vedem ce facem!

Well, now you have to solve it! Look for hosting in the nighty crowdy Essaouira! The bus station in near Medina (old city) and I propose to find housing here. Ștefan is tired and I think it is better to set the place to stay as fast as possible. We enter backpacked in the streets of Medina. A lot of people, a lot of noise, many open restaurants... I am fascinated with these chaotic situations when the solution to your problems comes from inside or when you don't expect it. If it was only on me, I would stay around for people or pictures. I know that we will stay here at least one day and I calm dowm my touric wishes. Now the priority is housing!

It is so hard to tell you the streets because you don't see a name anywhere. I know, they are on Google Maps! We are going to the sea, at a big cross we turn left and try the first riad. It is not ok with no air conditioned and window. We go to the next one, see the room, and decide for the place (after negociation): Etoile d'Essaouira. The room is at second level. We have a fine terrace, I think another terrace at the third level... We have wireless, hot water shower, towels, an extra-bed, table, three chairs... It is perfect! A fast shower and sleep! We'll see tomorrow!

Maroc 19-30.08.2016 - a doua zi/day 2, 21.08.2016

Mic dejun consistent!

Yesterday we presented to Morocco and Marrakech and reverse. Today we go to the mountains to the great north-african hights. We wake up in the morning (around 7.00) and in half an hour we are on the low terrace for breakfast. It is so zen and quiet here, I remind of some moments and feeling from India... The boys salute us and one of them brings the tea. I see how he pours the tea and I decide to learn how to make this tea and serve it like them (after a few months, when I write this, I am glad for the lesson I received at this local breakfast, as for other types of tea that I prepare with peace). We are given a plateau with sweets and butter, tea or coffee and a p place for each with morroccan flat bread (m'semmen as internet says), an omlette with small holes made on a pan, two slices of cake and a donut. And natural orange juice (an usual fruit here). Some are bought, some are home-made! I was not allowed to assist at cooking, they just showed and explained how how to make the tea, in the last days before going home. Consistent breakfast!

We thank for breakfast, take some pictures of our room Tulipe, of the relaxing room and the whole hotel/riad (for posterity :D), pack the baggages ant at 9.20 we salute our hosts and promise to come back ”when we come back from the mountains or before leaving home”.

We go out in Arset Aouzal road and the souk, turn right (we feel like ”home” here!) to the royal palace (where you can see ”la boulangerie” Dar El Bacha where I will take something sweet another time), then again right on rue Dar El Glaoui (I probably repeat, there are no signs with the streets, I tell you this for Google Maps), we keep near the palace wall and park Dar El Bacha and reach the place where you can see Koutubia, named Arset el Blik. We read in the guide about Grand Taxi station for a taxi to the mountains. We continue on Avenue El Mouahidine, pass the first cross to Avenue Hommane Al Fatouaki and to the right on rue Ibn Rochd we see the Grand Taxi station. Written in arabic and latin letters! We knew that the price is 300 dh for one car, no matter how many we are in the car. We also knew that it is ok to negociate. So we the the negociators coming to us like vultures between the cars (Dacia Logan Lodge or Renault Kangoo or Citroen Berlingo, you can see mostly french cars and sometimes one Ssang Yong Stavic). They tell us the price of 300 dh, we pretend to discuss the price and accept it (we know the price). We accept (price for whole car for both of us, 150 dh each and they confirm!) and the negociator takes us to a Logan Lodge. Good, we put the bagages and ”on bord”!

You realise that we let the driver guide us because we have no idea where we are in the city. He knows how to go out the city beside the mall and continue on R203 to Tahnaout. First we see blocks, then villas and residential quartiers and then just us, the road and cacti on both sides. We are lucky with the driver speaking a little french and english. Ștefan let me speak more in french (he understands and has difficulty in speaking). We talk about cars, roads, speed limits, sportives and especially football players, prices, animals (goats which they don't use for milk)... I know that women are tabu for muslims and we don't talk about that (only if they start to talk like my friend Yasin in Rajahstan). Curiosities from each other's world!

In Tahnaout he have the surprise of a good, asphalted, two lane way road. So it is wanted for all the road to Asni and further to Taroudant, Agadir and the great saharian dessert from south of Morrocco. Other worlds there... There are buses coming from Marrakech to Tahnaout. As we go to south, on the right bank we see the old village of Tahenaout or Azro and the drivers tells us that the true argan oil and soil pots are made here. The ones from Essaouira are commercial fakes. If he says so... He even tells us that a rich man made a soap and argan oil factory where poor women work and thus he helps community. Very nice!

We pass some villages with no name written anywhere, we enter a pine forest and soon we are on the curves before Oued Ghezaia gorges. We enter the gorges on the suspended road in tight bends with some emotions. The driver is so relaxed... Staying on the front seat, I make some pictures between the emotions from every curve. The driver (I forgot his name) tells us again and again about the villages where you can go up from Asni. Nice stories for another time! We exit the gorges and soon enter Asni with a Dacia Sandero in front of us. I shouldn't be amazed anymore!

In the center we turn left (we let the road to Taroudant on the right) and go up on Imlil valley. We are at 1150 meters altitude, we know that we still have to go up! The road becomes wilder and wilder, narrow (carreful when overrun) and with abundant vegetation. First cacti, then reed, then red rocks, poor houses, rocky walls, thick and low trees, old cars, people on the street... At 11.00 the driver let us in Imlil in the Grand Taxi parking. We give him the money and ask for a taxi back. ”You find here all the time” ”Thank you!” We take our bagages and go up to the city!

We make a few steps and I see on the right ”Bureau des guided d'Imlil”. We are at 1740-1750 meters altitude now! Let's go there! We go there, maybe we find something new. There are some maps that they try to sell us (”No, thank you, we have a very good guide”), there are posters with protected species among one is Gypaetus barbatus (we know that in the last year it was seen on Zăganu ridge in Ciucaș mountains, Romania) or other protected species. I am curious what means protection here! And more interesting, there is a register where the people who go up in the national park write some personal informations. There is no tax, just write the name and some data for all the people going up. As I read lately in ”Călător prin vreme” written by Valentin Borda, with aproximation: how many people have climbed and nobody knows about them as there is no mention about. We write the info requested and want to leave. As I didn't take my fixed poles, I ask where I can rent some poles and a man tells us to go with him and he lend me. He take us with his car to his home, Auberge Lepiney (info outside: tel +212 524 48 56 88, e-mail bouredda@hotmail.com) and while he searches for poles, he serves us with some tea and omlette. Ștefan is a little unsatisfied because he expects the man to ask a lot of money and he asked for 200 dh for everything plus 200dh as rent for the poles (50dh for each day). Ștefan took his poles and says that it is too much, I am ok with 5 euro/day. There are my money in fact! OK! He shows us how to continue on the path.

We go up on the road on the valley going up to shelter Lepiney through Tizi Mzik (saddle, 2489m) on the car road to Aremd. We follow the road with curves to the left to Assif Mizane Valley. For you to understand, the path to Toubkal shelters is on the valley through Aremd, we made a small tour to take the poles. We walk up hardly with the heavy backpacks in a powerful sun, some have the baggages on donkeys (usual way of transport here) and some local girls walk in plastic slippers and talk loud. For some people might be annoying, I like this now :D! We reach the highest point on the other side of Assif Mizane valley as we see Aremd (1920m). The road takes us on the left (geographically) side of the valley, we let a bathing place and a bridge to the village and go up easily on a dusty road.

We follow the road that takes us between houses, sand and gravel and green trees with thick leaves on the line of the valley. At a store we change some words with the merchand and reach a cross. I ask some locals who don't know the route (they are going up to the mosque) and again at the store and we have to continue on the valley. There are no signs, just a visibile path! In front of us we see the high mountains which we head to. We are about 2000 meters now. The path leads us on the right side of the valley (left as we go up) and starts to go up on rocks. From place to place (at about 30 minutes) we find some little stores with cold juice, sweets and fruits. And, of course, souvenir shops and cover in rainy moments. We stop at each of them to drink water. At the one from 2200 meters (souvenir shop) we are offered some scarfs and all kind of gifts (with money, logically). When we come back, not now! As we said we will take something, we have to keep the word.

We follow the red rock path and in 20 minutes we go down to the bridge of Sidi Chamarouch mosque (2350m). Stores and stores and we walk between them. We have to go up on a series of tight bends path on the left bank of the valley. The path is so narrow that we have problems when donkeys pass near us. We even risk to be hit and thrown in the valley! The truth is that the mule owners told us to stay on the up side of the path, not on the down one! The curves go up to 2650 meters, on the last one I let a group of 20-25 young english girls with a guide. The landscape become drier, only naked rocks, small or big gravel and some thorny bushes from place to place. All the time I watch for the hights to catch all the surprises of the mountain. We regroup and continue up slowly to 2800 meters. Here I wait Ștefan at an handmade orange juice drained in a press like those for garlic but bigger for oranges (20dh/glass).

We go up on level line and pass the terrace at 3000 meters in a constant rythm. We reach a group of four spanish girls and follow them. Finally they will stay in the same room with us in Toubkal shelter. At 2800 I admired some T-shirts and we have to take something (with negociation) when we turn back. The path goes up very subtle on the left side of the valley (west side) to the platform at 3200 meters (3207 precisely) where we see Mouflon (http://www.refugetoubkal.com/) and Toubkal (http://www.refugedutoubkal.com/) shelters (18.05). The first one seems to be for locals and it is more expensive (or maybe for clasic british climbing style) and the second one is more accesible and belongs to Alpine French Club, section Casablanca. At Toubkal a bed is 110 dh (11 euro) and 85 dh (8.5 euro) with CAF member card (or partner clubs). With CAR member card I get the small price for housing and we pay for everyday dinner. We intend to leave early in the morning because rain is announced everyday around 14.00. We take the beds and this is all for today.

Dinner, relaxing, snow outside, reading of posters or tries to enter on internet to send something home (GPS signal at the window in the down part of the shelter, no net), tea again and again, reading of the guide, making of equipment... There is no sense to leave on dark (we have to see the unmarked path) we decide to start at 6.30-7.00 in the morning to the top. It needs good resting and energy for tomorrow. There are about 1000 meters in level difference!
