Din partea frumoasă a Bikanerului spre picturile Mandawei 10.01.2014 From the beuty of Bikaner to Mandawa paintings

It's such a beautiful morning! It's normal, we have some objectives today! Unusual for me, I eat the breakfast indoor (tea and scrambled eggs), pay everything to the owner (including housing) and we start our way. I want to see Lallgarh fort before leaving the city.

Yasin buys some sweets for his kids (I fool myself with some sweets for 15 rupees/piece), we pass Bikaner temple (it's too much crowd and I don't want to enter) and go directly to fort's gate. Yasin is waiting in the car! I enter the elegant and clean fort built in 1902 by maharaja Ganga Singhji in the memory of his father Lall Singhji. It is a indo-saracenic style fort with rajput, Muslim and European influences. The gardens are always aroused and the grass is cut every day. The red massive rock seem very cold and you can feel inside the peace of the place and the elegance and pride of the inheritor family. I see the powerful British influence! I wanted to enter the library with very old Sanskrit manuscripts. I request this and I am taken to the office of the administrator of the palace and the library. The procedure is very complicated. I have to make a written request with what and why I want to read and it is possible to be accepted in 2-3 days. Private bureaucracy (especially here in the fourth biggest private library in the world!) I have to be glad to walk around the palace's gardens. For a few minutes I enter Lallgarh palace hotel, go around it near the tennis court and see a nice colored proud peacock, pass the crowning hall of Ganga Singh and don't enter the museum. 100 rupees are too much for one hall with historical pictures. I have places and exhibits outside!

I still have something to visit here: Laxmi Niwas hotel area and his gardens! I am attracted by some multicolored flags. I take the advantage of the reputation of my family for having access here. Normally only the royal families have the right to come here. I get the access after telling them that I come from a royal family from Romania (it is partially true because some generations ago my ancestors were rich people with hundreds of hectars; these times are gone; some qualities are still transmitted!). The gardens are huge and quiet, I can walk everywhere around in the salutations of the workers. I reach another big gate where I find the statue of maharaja Lall Singh, exceptional soldier remarked for his goodness and capacity of understanding and empathy with all around. I am forbidden to go around Laxmi Niwas hotel (private), I pass his frontpiece and go out to the parking place. near the parking I just take a picture through the closed gate to the temple dedicated to Garuda (the god-bird).

We continue to our last destination from the two weeks circuit: the painted buildings from Shwkhawati! Yasin goes out of Bikaner and we are very soon on NH (National Highway) 11. It is also a desert road and we stop only one tome for taking some pictures. On the road we meet big transport cars (they drive for long distances in India), smaller private or state cars (like the tourist cars including ours), camels, horses, donkeys, animals, carriages... Fatehpur (different from Fatehpur Sikri next to Agra) is the only city on the way that need to be mentioned because we get lost for some moments in the continuous agitation  and we have to turn back to follow the good road! And this is the only place in the desert where I see a glass offices building in the whole desert! Yasin knows the way and takes me among the cities of Shekhawati to Mandawa.

He knows two havelis (Mandawa and Shekhawati) well painted. We negociate t ostay at Mandawa and I ask for the cheapest room. "It is cold and has no windows!" "It's ok for me!" "Just for you, we give you a room at the second floor at the the same price!" I ask for the dinner up on the terrace and it will be ready in 45 minutes. I want to go out around in this time. I go with Yasin only to Shekhawati hotel where I enter for pictures. Yasin knows the people and I can go everywhere! I go up to the last floor for pictures (a carved wood wine table, classical painted walls from Shekhawati). At the second floor an Indian with long moustaches wants a picture near a big wall painting. Up on the terrace I see kids playing with kites all over the city. At the first floor I take pictures of some singing instruments and I am invited to the maharaja's appartment. All made of glass and crystal, wall painting more or less esthetical... "Come here with your girlfriend or wife :D!" The dinner alarm calls, I thank the hosts and go to my hotel up for dinner. It is a very rich meal (four dishes) and I savor it in the colors of sunset. Who can tell me what is in the last vertical picture above?

We chat a little after dinner and evening falls. I want two Gulab jamun sweets and a boy will bring them at the table on the terrace near my room's door. I take a shower, wonder about the painted walls (except the toilet door!), write something in the journal and go to sleep!

De la Jaisalmer spre est spre Bikaner 9.01.2014 from Jaisalmer to east to Bikaner

Early wake up because we have a long road today (more than 300 kilometers). The sun has just rose up and I am at Deep Mahal for breakfast. It's morning and Fatan, Little John and their nice Nepali "employee" were sleeping in the kitchen on mattresses. When I go there Fatan is almost jumping on! "Wake up and we speak after!" Little John is making the fire in a boiler, I snuggle under the blankets (it's a cold morning!) and the young Nepali boy asks for my phone. I know it's only the curiosity for music and games. He asks me about bluetooth and I don't have that. Fatan makes me a banana porridge and, before I eat it, he goes out to take the spices for me. I thought he forgot about that! We solve with money (in such places like here everything is flowing) and salute each other with brotherhood. I promise them that if I'll ever come to Jaisalmer, I'll stay here for sure! I go down to the big market inside the fort saluting once again the buildings before going out, in two big iron gates I reach the last market, visit a small temple on the left and go down after the parking place where me and Yasin set the date yesterday.

I tell him about Deep Mahal and the fort and we start our way. We go out of the city on the same way that we entered, pass the military units  (we must not forget that we are close to the Pakistani border!), follow NH 15 for 110 km to Pokhran on a good desert road (sand and dryness all over, some sand trees) and we enter the highway to Bikaner. the road is too constant for me and I will sleep for a few hours. I base on Yasin's very good Indian driver! The road is boring and Yasin tries to go fast to get ou of this zone. he doesn't seem to agree this part of the circuit!

Nu are să îmi dea 5 rupii rest.

Around 14.00 we reach Bikaner, repeat the action with the cheapest hotel at havasar Haveli known by Yasin! As usual big prices for foreigners! Yasin pays few rupees for housing and eating and sleep in the drivers' room! I don't accept the price they ask for and Yasin is not in mood for bargain. It's not working for me, he must negotiate for every 50 rupees! We find a good room at Desert Wind Hotel nearby, let the big pack in the room and go with the car to the camel farm 8 km outside of the city. Theoretically the show is better at sunset when camels come back from the desert! The locals seems like not knowing how to reach the farm and I am indignant. This is the major touristic objective for this city! Finally Yasin finds the way, we go there and we see a lot of tourists with buses, a dislike from me. I want freedom and less tourists! When I reach the entrance, I see that the entry fee is too hih for me. I am not a money thrower like other tourists! I don't enter and want just to buy some camel milk. I ask two bags (200 ml) of aromatic milk and one of raw milk (25 rupees). They don't have 5 rupees change and ask me to buy one more bag. I take that with irritation. I stress Yasin and the other drivers with this incorrectness which is a bad thing for India. they tell me that a lot of foreigners complain about that and they can do nothing about that. "Government is asking for taxes!" Fucking Government! I drink the two kinds of milk (Yasin doesn't like it) and it's not so great. It's like a raw cow milk a little more sour and bitter than usual!

We turn back to the city, yasin drops me in the city near Juganarh Fort at the roundabout for the Old Bus Station. I am in mood to wander. "Why would you do that?", any Indian could say. On the crowd Mahatma Gandhi Road I head to sunset to the old city. I pass the railway guided by the red circle from the sky, turn left on Kote Gate Road and find a little park on the left. The "urinary" tension and some messages from home, the mood dissapears and I turn back to bazaar. On the main street (Dauji/Mahatma Gandhi Road separated by one of the old city gates) I stop at a sweet store. I buy some kinds of sweets (120 rupees) and can't eat anymore after just two pieces. It's too much for my papillae! I will eat the rest in the following days!

I turn back to Juganarh Fort among stores and peddlers, drink a glass of sugar crane juice and face to the main face of the fort. It is closed (it's already dark!), pass a dancing fountain in Sursagar lake and a young man attracts me to his embroidery store. "It's next to your hotel. I will take you by bike!" "I preffer to walk, I come to your store!" On Municipal Road I reach the first roundabout and loose myself. I sit near an Indian at a boiler fire until he finishes to talk on the phone and he guides me to the stadion (near my hotel). I reach the hotel and take the dinner with Yasin at the table near the drivers' room. I am amazed that he accepted for me to enter their room which reminds me of the rooms in child camps with 8-12 parallel beds! We chat a bit and then go to sleep. We have a few interesting days in front of us!
