Ziua muzeelor din Dehradun 16.01.2014 Museums' day in Dehradun

"Bine!"

In the morning Sanjay don't seem to hurry even if he has to go to work. He prepares me a very good porridge and I doze a little longer. later I'll go to the institute and see what I can visit there. I enjoy the porridge on the step of the door looking to the garden, clean a bit the room (for my habit of not letting a place too chaotic) and head to the institute. Sanjay comes at the gate, I register in the gate register and wait for an approval of a superior researcher. The paper doesn't come and Sanjay propose me to come later when he hopes to solve it. There were some incident with outsiders and therefore so much bureaucracy! "Are you sure you don't mind for not showing the institute" "It's ok, i go to forest institute and come later! Just tell me the way!" "From the exit of the institute you turn right, at the first roundabout you turn left and you'll find the institute on the right!" "Thanks. Talk later!" "Fine!"

I follow my friends' indications, turn left at the roundabout on Chakrata Road, a boulevard with high trees on the margins and see indicative signs to FRI (Forest Research Institute). It's the good way! On the way i enter on the left side in a greenhouse where from you can buy flowers (I enter just for seeing!). It's very nice and I see the flowers in the gardens of "my" neighborhood. On the right side I pass a ceramic pots merchant. Temptations! I reach the main gate of the institute and it is closed. Some young topographers prepare their theodolite for measurements, I ask for the entrance and they show me the Trevor Road gate a few hundreds meters in front of me. I go to the entrance and pay the small amount of 5 rupees for the ticket! I shoot the map of the institute (incomplete in the northern part!) and I'll use it as a guide for a few hours from now! i want to reach the main building as fast as possible for the museums (they are told to be fine!). I walk on Trevor Road between deodars and lianas. On the both sides of the street we see offices and houses of the researchers. At a small roundabout I ass a small rover and turn right on Wilmot Road. On the left I pass Officers' Club  and I want to enter on Tackle Road on right. It is private and forbidden, I manage to take some photos in the pine wood near the road, go further to Brandis Road (between the main gate and the main building) and from here I turn left to the museums. The park is very fine and relaxing and I stay for a few minutes on the grass. I get close to the main building which hosts the 6 sections of the forest museum. You can find online information about FRI, but I didn't read about the combination of Greek columns and the two Moorish towers!

You enter the museums after paying a ticket. I pass the pathology section and find the ticket office behind the main building. 25 rupees for the all sections ticket! I see the pathology section before 1 o'clock (13.00-13.30 lunch break). In this section you can see different tree diseases (including fungi and parasitic plants) and the phots are forbidden. I find some hidden angles for some pictures!

Grădina asta mi-a făcut fericităziua!

I want to enter Social Forestry Museum and it"s closed for the break. So I go for a walk in the park behind the main building. What can I do because I can't stay just as that! On Howard and Schlich Road I see an old British red postal point. Near this point I see on the left an area with a lot of dry leaves and a bunch of high bamboo trees. Tempting? A thought is passing inside me: be careful of snakes and I just let him pass (I have sandals!). I go in the middle of high stems and look above me with admiration. Natural straight poles closing to the top like tapering African or Italian houses (like Oblio!) (search for Alberobello or Locorotondo on the net; I saw some pictures on the blog of a traveler). I go out of the bamboo house and between the trees I reach a small paved alley with a bamboo plantation-museum on the other side. There's no locker at the gate and I sneak inside on paved alleys. All kinds and sizes of bamboos, thorny bamboos, 20-25 cm thick stems (as big as my palm!), thin stems bamboos, bamboos used for houses, boats, buildings, paper... Light beams among the strong stems... I walk all the ways around and it's speechless. This garden made me happy for the whole day! It's only one of such moments! I let you enjoy some images and feel yourself there!

The alleys guide me over bridges between bamboo bunches to a gate in the south-east corner of the garden. It has a locker and I ask a guardian from the other side "How can I go out of here?" "You know, you are not allowed inside" "Well, I am inside, how can I go out? Jump over the fence?" "You are not allowed. We make an exception this time!" I jump over the fence and go to the main building through the park between groups layed on the grass. I enter the big corridors between museum halls and enter to entomology museum. they don't let me take pictures and I get the accept for it when I tell them that i work in the field and give them details about bees and termites. "Hide from other visitors!" I am fascinated  with the details about each species of plants and parasites. I could stay here for a long time! Happy with these pictures, I go to the next museum: Non wood forest products museum! It's all about forest products used in alternative medicin: flowers, branches, bark, resins, flavors... They don't let me take pictures and almost kick me out! "Well if you don't let me take pictures, what kind of commercial can I make for you?" I go to timber museum and I am not let to take pictures. I "steal" the picture of an old 700 years cedar trunk! For the next two sections I get the stamps/perforations from one guy: Silviculture (forest levels, forest work, Indian and British instruments) and Social forestry (uses of wood in human society). I see a qoute of Indira Gandhi for sustaining of nature helping activities.

Oau, chiar muzeele astea merită orice apreciere!

Oau, these museums worth every appreciation! They are classic and shabby, but the information is impressive! I go out of the main building enchanted of all museums, go on Brandis Road, admire once again the beauty of the park and reach Wilmot Road at the earlier roundabout. I have to follow another way! I choose to turn back on the private Laurie Road to the end of Trevor Road. It's so quiet here that you wouldn't go out in the city! I go out on the same gate and take a bus on Chakrata Road to the big roundabout and right to the institute. I pay the ticket on the way and go down of the bus at the institute. I call Sanjay, enter with them to the cafeteria and clean some mails while they have some work to do. Later Sanjay offers himself as a guide to geology museum (you are not allowed to take pictures and he will take some from hidden angles). He tells me about Himalayan rocks, fluorescent rocks, area geology and finally about the researches of D.N.Wadia, the founder geologist of the institute. The exposed geologist bag remind of my grandfather. The same poky researcher with a mountain of information and spirituality inside! We go out after writing a comment in the museum's impression book and receiving a flyer of the institute and another one with earthquake prevention and actions.

Before leaving home (for dinner) we assist at a badminton game and I meet some colleagues of my friends. We take some food and condiments for home (cheap and recommended by Sanjay) and Arun is waiting for us at the exit. On the way home I remember that i don't have toilet paper (useless for Indians!) and enter with Arun in the supermarket to take some paper and nice aromatic cones. In the evening we chat for some time and right before going to bed, Sanjay offers me some gifts for me and Raluca (very nice of him!). Good night!

A simple day can change you for life! What can be a "common" road of a few hours from Uttarkashi to Dehradun? If material changes are not so big, the spiritual ones and reformulation of own dimensions are surely bigger and more important.

In the morning I salute my hosts (the boys from the hotel sleeping on the tables from the restaurant) and go to search for the bus to Dehradun. The bus belongs to a "state company" and it's the only bus trip with ticket! With seat reservation! Last evening I talked to an Indian from Dehradun to go down together and I didn't see him at the bus. No problem! I am used with the change of people! I take my ticket, go up in the bus on another seat and then on mine (to respect the seats on the tickets)! My friend comes and later on the road he will make place for me in the driver's cockpit! We leave around 6.20. Temporal relativity!

We leave before the beginning of the day on the road we came. First we go up on the stone road and a woman puts her head out and vomits. We pass Dharasu and I see that the driver turns right on a different road than two days ago. And the road goes up. And up, and up! At one moment the sun rises in a red circle that keeps me centered on it! I start to reformulate myself. What I knew about mountain roads (including the one two days ago) becomes senseless. The road goes after mountain feet and earns altitude. It look like we are going in dark valley or we are going on mountain ridges and you feel like you're flying of the curve. The driver has a constant speed, the luggage stays fixed on the bus. I feel more and more relaxed, although every curve makes me anxious. We are going for some time and in Wan we have two short curves. Some people are going down here (where might they go?). We pass under the houses and the pile of Gewhoti. The road is going in a wood tunnel and at one moment the driver turns left from the main road (to Dandalgaon). "It's a new road!" (On Google Maps it's a link road). From this point you can't follow any map because the roads don't exist on maps. We go up on a desert mountain range up to 2000 meters and go down in a glacial cirque. The places are amazing and I turn my head allover all the time. The size of mountains modify my criteria of the size of nature. At one moment my friend shows me (I'm in the cockpit now!) the 5000 meters mountain ranges! They look so small and far (covered with ice and snow, everything is dry here!) and we seem to be higher. I didn't have this experience: the 5000 mountains seem smaller that the 2000 meters where we are now! We go down in the cirque and pass on the left side with long curves. In one turn we have to wait for the working cars to go of the road. The road is digged in the rock! I know I repeat myself but I continuously reformulate myself on this road! We go down on a secondary river and stop at 1.30 for breakfast. My friend (they call themselves brothers!) offers me a noodle soup and a tea. And I resolve my problems at a Turkish toilet. This detail is not nice but I mention it because it is one of the few public Turkish toilets in the mountains! We continue in some villages and I see school girls proud of their school suits. I cancel my thoughts about the way we are going. The only way to follow the road is a GPS! We go up in the wood on one lane asphalt road and reach the highest part of Mussoorie area (the last picture below) in Suwakholi are (I guess!). We are at 2200 meters in Dehradun's resort!

We turn east in all the resort and leave it on the right (with a two kilometer road to center). We turn left on Mussoorie Road and go down to the plain. I know we still have two hours down to Dehradun. Because I have nothing else to do, I admire the 4 lane road and the endless curves. My friend announce me wheen we are close to town and we change the phone numbers. "In case you need something, just call me, ok?" He goes of in Kishanpur at the beginning of the city and I go to center to Mussoorie bus stand. Back to dirty Indian plain! I go off the bus, take a glass of sugar crane juice and call Sanjay. I don't know how to explain where i am and he asks me ti ask a nice person to guide me (they are speaking in their language). Two young boys understand my destination and with a cop woman search for no. 5 vikram (the rickshaws I told you about). Only in Dehradun the rickshaws are called vikrams and go on fixed lines! They don't find the line and agrees with Sanjay to rent a rickshaw to the institute! Sanjay is paying my driver! I go to the institute, eat with them at the cantine, go with Sanjay (as a guide) in the institute (as much as bureaucracy allows) and drives me with the motorbike to Arun's place to take my big pack and relax. We walk to Sanjay's home in a few hours to leave my pack. On the way they buy something ti eat and they will prepare the dinner (Sanjay, Raitam and Arun). We chat and I enjoy the atmosphere. They try to teach me how to eat with the hand and they fail (or I don't admit the new experiment!). Sanjay has a mattress on the floor, a small table and a simple room rent on the back side of a villa with a diverse garden in the back of the house (in front of the Sanjay's door). It is very fine and you don't feel the time passing!

La picioarele uriașilor și mai apoi printre călugări și trepte de orez 14.01.2014 At the feet of the giants and later between monks and rice stairs

I respect my morning plan and wake up one of the boys from the hotel to solve my car. Before 6 o'clock he finds for me the first car going up the valley. I fix the price for a return ticket for 200 rupees and wait for departure. He assures me that other people will be in the car on the way! We sty for 30 minutes to see a tradition of a group of young men dancing and balancing a little shrine with a god inside. Being night, I see only their movements and the moment they leave by putting the shrine on a bus (all mixed with a tea bought by the driver and payed after). At 6.30-6.35 we start the trip. We are four people in the car. I don't know the principle of putting me on the back bench in the middle of the car and I couldn't take any pictures!

We go out on the main road of the resort and light is up after the last houses. We pass the small village of Gangori (a road is going from here to the camping place from the river Aasi Ganga) and the road is going up on the right side of the valley. The stone road is hooked 50-70 meters above the level of the water. We have a lot of curves, up and down, the waters of Bhagirathi are turquoise lake the lake from yesterday and sometimes dark in the deep water digging canyon. From Maneri (1298 m) we go up to Malla (1478 m), then Raithal and at Gangnani we are at 2133 m altitude. We can see just a few houses down to the valley! The road is going up to 2400 m and in a few large curves (like Transfăgărășan) we go up on the slope to Sukhi Top (2651 m). A leveled road and some curves take us down to the level of water which we pass on a bridge on the left side. We go down to Jhala (2575 m) and the road goes through the jungle to the last accesible hamlets. We pass above Harsil (about 2800 m) and go down to Dharali (2575 m). This is the terminus point and the driver turns around. I ask him if we stay 10-15 minutes and he agrees. I have time to taste the altitude! I don't care about the strange looking of Indians and act like a child thirsty for beauty. First I admire the white border between India and China (Baspa Bamak massive up to 5000 meters) and go up with the camera open. Dharali is a hamlet with wooed houses on rock terraces. A main path goes between houses, passes the "main market" and goes up between donkeys to the last house. I stop here to the the frame image. And the "blockage" appears! I am a small point comparing to Dharali. The hamlet is a small point comparing to surroundings (4500-5500 meters mountain tops). The massifs around are a small point comparing to all Himalaya! You feel the hugeness  and the greatness of everything around you even if you can't hold everything in your feelings. Only the thought realize how big and beautiful is our big planet! With thanks to Divinity for allowing me to unexpectedly come here, I go down to the main street where some kids are playing an improvised baseball 50 meters to a herd of calm black cows. I go down on the terrace above the temple in river's direction and see the drivers waving his hand to me. Five minutes, please! I take some stones for my sister (as geophysicist she has a big collection) and go to the car. There are many locals going down. We go up in the car and start the way back.

The first stop is Harsil, they let and take some luggage, some Indians go up in the car. I take the chance and watch for the last time the north white headed giants and the ones on the both sides of Bhagirathi. A 25 years old Indian in military suit helps on fixing the luggage on the car. After Harsil I feel sick and ask for the car to stop for a few minutes. I take some fresh air and we continue. To avoid sickness, I fell asleep on half of a back seated bench in the car. No pictures! I sleep until we reach bus station in Uttarkashi. Because I don't feel so good, I go up in the hotel at my room and relax for an hour with some nuts in shell on the terrace/bridge of the rooms. Relaxing in the sun is very good. Should it be the altitude influence in my state of health?

Around 15.00 I go for a walk up to Gangori. I know I have just a few kilometers. Without rush and any fixed target, just wandering in the resort! near the last houses I go down to the mountain school because I want to go to the massive bridge over the river. After the bridge you can see the houses with beautiful lights from last evening! One foot of the bridge is destroyed and they made some metallic stairs for walking area. I go up on the bridge for some pictures up on the river, admire the boys who break river stone continuously and find another way to the main street. A little way up I go down to the water because I wanted to feel the sound of water. Especially because it's holy Ganga here! I just want to meditate and some young monks (about 20 years old!) want to make them some pictures. Just one picture! Another wanderer/monk in dirty clothes is cleaning himself and his dishes in the water. First he takes his stuff and when he sees me not acting, he acts natural. I pass Shivananda ashram (on the left) and find a path that takes me up in a few curves to a paved path. I turn right, reach the lowest part of Kansen hamlet and see a road to Touristic Office for Gangotri glacier. I choose to go up between houses in the hamlet. A boy has a big role of fence mesh and refuses my help. I think he knows his way and it's not my role to make his job easier. I exit the houses area on a paved path and meet three Indians coming with bunches of  brushwood. Just a Namaste and some questions about liking the area! Very nice interaction! On the paved alley I reach a cemetery above a ravine. I stop a few minutes for the dead people and find a steep short curved path to the ridge above. I am at the margin of a rice platform. I ask a local: Gangori? Uttarkashi? She explains me in Hindi and show the direction with the extended arm. I thank her and go to Gangori. I reach a path going up tp the highest houses of Sangrali and go down on it wit confirmation of the good way. I reach a reservoir/water station and the paved path becomes asphalted. A dizzy Indian is going up with the nephew ("son of my son") and can't convince me to go up to his house. "I may come tomorrow!" "God sees you if you said". I go down on little streets and a postman confirm the right direction. I stop to admire the red clouds sky and go down between houses and among courts to the main road.

I have two kilometers to Uttarkashi. I start my way smiling, it gets dark and I reach known places. Near the centered market a traveler ask me for a cheap housing. She wnts to pay 100-150 rupees! I don't know such a place and I can only indicate the direction of Vishwanath temple. I buy some oranges and go to the hotel. While dinner is prepared, I chat with the owner (I registered the tourist register because I stayed for two nights), send some mails home and pay everything (housing, food, tip for the fine attitude). he doesn't know about Tripadvisor because he deserves recommendations! I go up in my room, wash myself and go to sleep. Tomorrow I have a morning wake-up (6 o'clock)!

Uimitoare și neașteptată călătorie spre baza Himalayei 13.01.2014 Amazing and unexpected travel to the base of Himalaya

As I said, the plan for today is Rishikesh and Haridwar. Being prepared for everything, I have everything I need in my small pack. In the morning I take my breakfast with Arun, we go to his place of work (the institute I told you about) and more to ISBT bus station to search for a bus to Rishikesh. The first bus at the exit of the station is goingg to Rishikesh! The best situation! The tax taker is screaming the destination and I jump in the bus. On the way to Haridwar we exit the city through a natural reservation. Crowd street as usual! After Doiwala we get out of Haridwar way on the road to Rishikesh, climb a wooden hill (it looks very high) and go down to Rishikesh on the right side of Chandrabhaga valley and reach the bus station. I like so much the place and I lose all the turns! In the bu station I feel a little dizzy. In fact I need a toilet. I find one and they accept my 5 rupees cash and then I check for the buses around. If i don't find a good bus, it's possible to stay here and leave tomorrow (wherevere it may be!).

I hear all kinds of destinations for buses and I see on charts and hear Yamunotri and Gangotri. Gangotri is the destination wherefrom you can make a trip to the spring of mother Ganga! Ganga (known as Gange) has a spring in an glacier more than 3000m high and it's one of the holy indian rivers!

As an extra, you'll see only two picture, one being a map from Uttarkashi hotel, one of the few good maps found in India for free.

They tell me that buses don't go to Gangotri and only to Uttarkashi. I have to go to the nearby bus station. Instantaneous change of plan: I go to Uttarkashi, stay one night there and we'll see after! I ask "Uttarkashi? Uttarkashi?" in that station (better said a place for leaving buses and a lot of noise), they show me my bus and we leave in 10 minutes. The price (220 rupees) seems a little big and I will soon realize that it's too small for the quality of the road. We go up to Narendra Sagar and turn rigt to Tehri. I must say that the fascination of the road made me forget about the places (not to many localities). The road is going up in the jungle and the steep curves make me feel like being more than 2000 meters. In reality it's less than 500 meters! We turn right to Gaja (the name is for you for Google maps because some roads are not on any maps) and then we go down on a lot of curves on the right side of Bhagirathi river (the last highest part of Ganga). I watch on the windows and don't take any pictures being in the middle of the bus. I record the images in my mind and think about taking pictures/filming on the way back!

In a few hours we reach Chamba for eating break. We are now at 1600 meters altitude. from this point we have a direct road to Narendra Sagar to Rishikesh. I still plan to go back on this road! I take some samosa, some biscuits and peanuts in shell and a spicy sandwich, take a bottle of water and solve some bladder problems. Indians pee everywhere, but I can't! I half an hour we continue on the road. From Chamba we go down on a curved road on the right side of Bhagirathi river. In the rush of the bus on the hooked curves I see the turquoise waters of the Tehri dam lake. The color is fascinating and I let myself carried by the way. The asphalt is good and suddently it is stopped by some working places for the road consolidation. If I didn't trust the Indian drivers, I could say that it overturns! I watch on the window all the time, I receive a place near the driver and admire the road from the front of the bus. We stay at sixes and sevens and the human and physical approach are bigger than in the west. You hold a boy in your lap, you make place for a mother or an old lady, you make place for some boys or elders... Staying near the window, at one moment one man asks me to make place. He put his head on the window and vomit. It is completely normal! The driver continues without bothering! The night is falling and we are still on the road! We pass Dharasu (back again here in two days) and turn right on the same Bhagirathi valley. This is the name of Ganga here! I love to travel, but I would like to reach Uttarkashi now being all day on the road. At a moment we start to go down on a ground sandy road to the city. I still feel more than 2000 meters and are at 1500-1600 m as earlier! The road was so nice that I could see the teeth of the Făgăraș comb a few times bigger with the spikes in the turquoise lake. Itțs dark now and the driver goes down in the valley full of small lights. Not so many because the people are going to sleep early!

We reach the center (bus station) at 19.30. I tell the driver that I go back with him tomorrow morning. At 6.00 in the morning! We will meet at the bus! I am satisfied of coming up here in Himalaya (I didn"t think of coming back to Himalaya, even at the base!) and my only thought is to find a place to eat and sleep. i enter the first hotel and ask if they know rooms for 250-300 rupees! "Yas, we have. Let me show you a room!" He gives me a nice simple room at the second floor, I go down to eat and ask the receptionist where I can buy some pens. My pen is almost finished! "Ask at the store on the corner!" I go there and buy green writing pens that keep more time and use!As the color of writing in journal is not important, I buy three pens and turnback to the hotel. I eat for dinner and fix my eyes on the best ever seen road map from India. I talk to the owner of the hotel/receptionist and he tells me about touristic cars (common taxi) that go up to Dharali (2575 m) after Harsil (2745 m). They are leaving also at 6.00! The price is good and negotiable (by the boys from the hotel!). Change of plan! I stay two night in Uttarkashi and tomorrow I will go as high as possible with the common taxi on the valley to Gangotri! Being happy for going up to Gangotri direction between the small giants (on the map Jhala-Harsil-Dharali area is situated between 5000 and 6000 tops), I go to sleep to wake up early for the car!
